Car Summer Servicing Guide

Car Summer Servicing Guide

After the harsh winter weather, you need to ensure your car is properly serviced for summer. Some car owners don’t appreciate the necessity of summer servicing their cars. Taking your car in for regular maintenance services is great, but it’s not enough if you want to extend the lifespan of your car. Summer maintenance is crucial, and you don’t need to be a mechanical expert to keep your car running at top performance.

If you’re unsure of what you need to check to get your car ready for summer, this summer car service guide will help.  It may seem like a costly endeavour to service your vehicle for summer, but it will essentially prevent you from having to pay for more expensive repairs in the long run.

Change the Tires

Winter tires need to be replaced by summer tires. Winter tires are made from softer rubber than summer tires. Driving with winter tires on the hot asphalt roads will quickly wear the winter tires down. Once you’ve changed your tires, you need to check the air pressure of each tire. A tire can burst driving at high speeds if its air pressure is incorrect. You also need to ensure that your car is perfectly balanced after the tires have been changed. You can have balancing done at a tire service centre. Tires that are installed correctly improve your car’s fuel efficiency.

Check the Air Filter and Air Conditioning System

Your car’s air filter is important to check as an old filter can damage your air conditioning system. Air filters block out pollen during the summer. Your air filter may have become worn due to the constant traffic jams in the winter as it may have had to block out pollutants from other cars’ exhausts. Prevent damage to your aircon system by replacing an old air filter. It will save you a significant amount of money in the long run. Replacing aircon systems can run up to $4,000.

Also, give your aircon system a good test. If your aircon is blowing out hot air when you set it to cold air, then a quick fix may be to give the system a refrigerant charge. If the refrigerant doesn’t make an improvement, you may want to take your car to a summer car maintenance centre to diagnose the problem.

Inspect the Brake System

If your brakes make a grinding sound when you come to a stop, you may need to have your brake pads replaced. Driving on worn brakes is not only dangerous, but it can also damage the rotors of the wheel.

Check the Engine Fluids

Inspect the wiper fluid, power steering fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid. Coolant fluid needs to be clear. You’ll be able to get a coolant tester from a service centre. If you’re unsure how to check the coolant yourself, you may ask a mechanic to assist you. Checking and topping up engine fluids is important as they tend to evaporate.
