The GT500 is the top dog of the Ford lineup, and the fact is clearly demonstrated in its sleek, powerful, two-door coupe design. It carries the traditional prominent Mustang hood that's typical of the muscle car shape but sweeps the roofline steeply backward to give a low, lean, and mean feel. And while the standard option seats four, the rear seats can be removed before purchase to lighten the load and increase performance even further.

But it's under the hood where the true class of the GT500 makes its presence felt. The model includes the most powerful engine ever added to a Ford production car, with the 5.2L supercharged V8 cranking out a formidable 760 horsepower and 625lb-ft of torque. All that power is passed through to rear-wheel-drive only, via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that shifts in all the right places.
This mighty powertrain can more than compete with racetrack exotics, which is quite some achievement for a street-legal car. Acceleration from 0-100km/h hovers around 3.4 to 3.6 seconds depending on tire choice, while the Brembo brakes and advanced chassis tuning mean all that power is kept under close control.

Unusually for a car with performance pitched at track level, the infotainment in the cabin is as generous as on the more moderate Mustang models. An 8" touchscreen runs Ford's Sync 3 software, along with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a Wi-Fi hotspot facility. Instrumentation is handled by a 12" digital gauge cluster, while there's also voice control for many of the entertainment features.
Those with an ear for audio might like to upgrade the sound system to the 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen option, all the better to compete with the mighty V8 roar.
